Menan is a city in Jefferson County, Idaho, United States. It is part of the Idaho Falls, Idaho Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 707 at the 2000 census.

History

Menan was the first settlement of Latter-day Saints in the Snake River Valley. It was founded in 1879.[1]

Menan is located at (43.720520, -111.994914).[2]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 707 people, 220 households, and 187 families residing in the city. The population density was 745.0 people per square mile (287.3/km²). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 245.5 per square mile (94.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.13% White, 0.14% Native American, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 11.32% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.43% of the population.

There were 220 households out of which 44.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.7% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.0% were non-families. 11.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.21 and the average family size was 3.51.

In the city the population was spread out with 34.1% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,406, and the median income for a family was $40,357. Males had a median income of $29,531 versus $21,750 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,464. About 7.3% of families and 11.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.0% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.

Menan is home to a large Fourth of July celebration every year. (Held on the 5th when the 4th is a Sunday). This celebration includes games, food, a duck race, games, and fun for all ages. The fireworks at dark rival, in height, Idaho Falls famous Melaleuca fireworks. As Menan is away from any airport, the size restrictions are negated. there are typically thousands of people who turn out from surrounding areas for this yearly celebration.
